Business Lines of Credit for St. Cloud, MN Owners in Stearns County, MN

A business line of credit is a limit you draw on when a cost arrives and pay down when revenue comes in. Interest runs only on what is outstanding, and on a revolving line the repaid amount is available again.

Swiftstead Commercial Capital connects you with lending partners; partners make credit decisions and set rates and terms.

In short

Swiftstead Commercial Capital, a small-business funding broker in St. Cloud, Minnesota, arranges business lines of credit through lending partners. A line gives a limit to draw on for recurring, uneven costs such as materials, parts or payroll between invoices, with interest only on the balance used. Partners set the limit, rate, fees and renewal terms.

How draws and repayment work

The partner approves a limit. You draw what you need, when you need it, by transfer or check. Interest accrues on the outstanding balance, and many lines require a minimum monthly payment. Pay the balance down and, on a revolving line, that room is free to draw again. Some lines also carry a draw period after which the balance converts to installments; ask when that happens and what the payment becomes.

Revolving and non-revolving lines

A revolving line restores your available credit as you repay, much like a card. A non-revolving line lets you draw up to the limit once, in pieces, and repaid amounts do not come back. Non-revolving lines suit a project with staged costs; revolving lines suit the ongoing push and pull of a business.

Secured and unsecured lines

Secured lines are backed by receivables, inventory or a general lien on business assets. Unsecured lines rely on cash flow and credit and usually come with a personal guarantee. The bigger the limit, the more likely a partner wants security. Ask whether the line requires an annual review or renewal and what can trigger a reduction of the limit.

Line of credit or a business credit card

A card is convenient for small purchases you clear every statement. A line usually suits larger, recurring costs such as payroll between invoices or a materials order, and it can be drawn as cash, which most cards discourage. Cards also tend to carry higher rates on balances that linger. Many owners keep both: the card for day-to-day spending, the line for bigger swings.

Does a business line affect personal credit?

It can. Many partners check the owners' personal credit when you apply, and a personal guarantee makes you responsible if the business does not pay. Whether the line itself appears on your personal credit report depends on the partner and the product, so ask before you sign. Late payments on a line you have personally backed can reach your personal file even when routine activity does not.

How big a limit to request

A line that is too small runs dry in the one month you need it; a line far larger than your needs may be harder to get and can carry unused-line or maintenance charges. A practical way to size it by hand: pull the last twelve months of statements, find the three months where outgoing payments ran furthest ahead of deposits, and note how deep the shortfall went before revenue caught up. The deepest of those gaps, plus a margin you are comfortable with, is a sensible starting point for the conversation. The partner sets the actual limit.

Also note how long each gap lasted. A line that is drawn to the limit for months at a time starts to behave like a term loan, and a partner reviewing the account at renewal will notice.

Uses that recur

  • Materials for jobs billed after completion.
  • Payroll in weeks when receivables lag.
  • Repairs that cannot wait for the next deposit.
  • Supplier discounts for paying early.

Stearns County had 305 professional, scientific and technical service establishments in 2023, 60.7 percent of them with fewer than five employees (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023); firms like these bill after the work is done and carry the gap in between. The county employer profile shows the other sectors. The posts on payroll timing and contractor payroll on a new job work through examples, and funding by sector covers which industries draw most.

Credit line versus term loan

If you know the amount and the purpose today and the purchase lasts for years, a term loan is usually simpler. If you know a cost will recur but not when or how big, a line fits. For one gap with a clear end, working capital may be enough. The comparison table sets them side by side, and the four steps explain how a request moves.

Owner Questions

Can a business credit line show up on my personal credit?

It can. Partners often check personal credit at application, and a personal guarantee makes you liable. Ask how the line is reported.

When does a credit line beat a business card?

For larger, recurring costs and cash draws, often yes. For small purchases cleared every month, a card may be simpler.

What is the difference between revolving and non-revolving?

A revolving line frees up credit as you repay. A non-revolving line can be drawn up to the limit once.

Can a partner reduce my limit?

Many contracts allow it at review or renewal. Ask what triggers a reduction before you sign.
