This heavy equipment loan calculator estimates the monthly payment, total interest and total cost including the down payment from the machine price, down payment, interest rate and term. Swiftstead Commercial Capital, a small-business funding broker in St. Cloud, Minnesota, offers it to Stearns County contractors as an arithmetic check only, not an offer or a prediction of terms.
What to enter
- Equipment price: the quoted price of the excavator, loader, skid steer, lift or trailer, plus any attachments you are financing.
- Down payment: cash you will put in, or the value of a trade-in once you have subtracted it by hand.
- Rate: the yearly interest rate printed on an offer, or a figure you want to try.
- Term: how many monthly payments the deal runs.
The calculator shows the monthly payment, the total interest over the term and the total cost of the machine with the down payment included.
Heavy equipment details to add by hand
Dealer quotes for heavy equipment often list freight, setup, attachments and extended warranties separately. If you plan to finance them, add them to the price before you enter it. If a trade-in is part of the deal, subtract its agreed value from the price, or enter it as the down payment, but not both.
Checking the arithmetic yourself
Multiply the monthly payment by the number of payments and add the down payment; that should match the total cost shown. Subtract the price and you have the cost of financing, which should equal the total interest. Run the same sum on any offer: if the offer's total is higher, ask what the difference covers.
Limits of this calculator
- It does not calculate lease payments or buyouts. For a lease, ask the lessor for the total of all payments plus the buyout figure.
- It does not model skip-payment or irregular schedules. If an offer skips months, add up the actual payments by hand.
- It does not show weekly or daily payments; convert by hand if an offer is quoted that way.
- It does not include taxes, insurance or maintenance.
- It does not predict what any partner will offer.
Where the rate comes from
Use the rate printed on an offer, not one from an advertisement. If an offer gives only a payment and a term, skip the rate and compare totals: payment times the number of payments, plus the down payment. Dealer promotions sometimes trade a low rate for a higher price; compare the total cost, not the rate alone.
Why Stearns County, MN contractors run this first
Stearns County had 540 construction employer establishments in 2023, and 68.9 percent of them had fewer than five employees (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). For a crew that size, one machine can be the largest purchase of the year, and knowing the monthly figure before calling anyone keeps the conversation short. Equipment financing explains loans, leases and finance agreements; contractor and construction financing covers the rest of a contractor's funding; and business term loans cover packages that mix equipment with other costs. More tools are on the resources hub.
